Red Flags
Catching these warning signs early puts you in control of the project and the budget. If you recognize more than two of these on your home, it's time to call SOS Roofing and Siding for an honest assessment.
Bubbles beneath the surface indicate trapped moisture — a sign water has already infiltrated behind your siding and the panels can no longer do their job.
When your siding's color has deteriorated past the point that a fresh coat of paint would help, the material itself has reached the end of its useful life.
Warping means the material has been compromised by heat, moisture, or improper installation. Buckled panels create gaps that allow water and pests to enter the wall cavity.
Any gap you can see between panels or at trim intersections is a point where your exterior envelope has failed. These rarely stay small on their own.
If you're repainting the exterior more often than every seven to ten years, the siding itself is the problem — it's not holding the coating the way sound material should.
Deteriorating siding loses its insulating value and develops gaps and cracks that increase air exchange between inside and outside. If your energy bills have risen without a clear cause, your exterior could be a factor.
The SOS Roofing and Siding Commitment
We work in Merrick, NY's specific climate conditions every day. Our material recommendations are based on what we've seen perform well locally — not a national catalog.
Our estimates are written and itemized. We explain what's included, what's not, and why — and we don't pressure you to sign the same day. You deserve time to make an informed decision.
The people who gave you the estimate are the people who show up for installation. No handoffs to outside crews, no inconsistency in workmanship standards.
We take away everything we take off. Old panels, trim pieces, nails, and packaging are hauled off so your property is left clean at the end of every day.
Siding Replacement Services
When your siding has reached the end of its useful life, full replacement is the most cost-effective long-term move. We remove the existing siding, inspect and repair the substrate, install new house wrap, and put up premium new material. Every surface gets addressed — no spot repairs that create visible patches.
Get an EstimateNot every replacement project requires a full exterior teardown. When damage is isolated to specific sections and the surrounding siding is in solid condition, we can replace only the affected panels. We match profiles and colors carefully to minimize visual inconsistency.
Get an EstimateIn situations where the existing siding is in stable condition and the structure supports the added weight, new siding can be installed directly over the existing layer. This approach reduces labor costs and shortens the project timeline while still giving your home a completely refreshed exterior appearance.

What You Should Know
The conversation around Siding Replacement often starts with a cost question, but experienced Merrick homeowners quickly learn that the real question is about timing. Keeping deteriorating siding on a home longer than it should stay there doesn't preserve the money you're trying to save — it compounds the cost. What starts as weathered, faded panels can become a moisture infiltration problem that reaches your sheathing, your insulation, and eventually your interior walls. At that point, the project costs significantly more than a straightforward replacement would have.
From an energy efficiency standpoint, new siding can make a meaningful difference to how your home performs year-round. This is especially true when you choose an insulated product that adds continuous foam backing beneath the panel layer. Continuous insulation eliminates thermal bridging at framing members, which is a significant source of heat loss in typical wall assemblies. Merrick homeowners who upgrade to insulated siding often notice a reduction in how hard their heating and cooling systems run during seasonal extremes — though we're careful never to project specific savings figures since results vary by home.
Steel siding is a growing category we see more often now, particularly on modern-style homes and in exposed, high-wind locations across Merrick, NY. Steel won't crack on impact the way vinyl can, it's non-combustible, and it's virtually impervious to moisture once properly installed and painted. The trade-offs are cost and the need for proper paint maintenance to prevent surface oxidation at any scratches or cut edges over time.
A typical single-story home in the Merrick area sees installation begin and reach a visible stage of progress on the first day. Most projects wrap within two to four days depending on the home's size and the extent of any prep work needed. We wrap up each day with a site cleanup pass so the property stays reasonably organized throughout the project. At completion, we do a full walkthrough with you and address anything that needs attention before we call the job done.
For homeowners in Merrick who are navigating the decision between contractors, we recommend asking every bidder for a few specific things: a copy of their liability insurance certificate and workers' compensation documentation, a written estimate that itemizes labor and materials separately, and references from similar projects completed in your area. Contractors who hesitate on any of those requests should be treated with caution. The siding replacement market has a reasonable number of operators who cut corners on insurance or substrate preparation in ways that create expensive problems down the road for homeowners. SOS Roofing and Siding provides all documentation before any project starts and is happy to connect you with past clients in Merrick and across Merrick, NY.

The repair-vs-replace decision comes down to how widespread the damage is and the age of the existing siding. Isolated damage on siding that's otherwise in solid shape is often worth repairing. But systemic problems — widespread fading, multiple failed panels, chronic moisture readings — usually make replacement the more economical choice over five to ten years.
